EPA is Updating Landfill Emissions Factors Under Clean Air Act Section 130

August 15, 2024.   In order to improve emissions estimates for municipal solid waste landfills, EPA is making several updates to landfill emissions factors under Clean Air Act Section 130.  Based on review of available data, along with consideration of public comments the agency received on the draft emissions factors posted in January 2024, EPA has made several changes to municipal solid waste landfill emissions factors found in AP-42 Section 2.4. These updates include adding six new emissions factors and revising five existing emissions factors for landfill gas flares, engines, and fugitive emissions sources at municipal solid waste landfills. In order to improve consistency in estimation methods used across EPA program areas, EPA also is updating the equation for estimating methane generation rates to be consistent with the equation used in EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. After review, EPA has determined that it is not necessary to revise factors to estimate emissions of oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds from turbines and boilers at municipal solid waste landfills at this time.   More information: https://www.epa.gov/air-emissions-factors-and-quantification/final-emissions-factors-ap-42-chapter-2-section-4.
