The A&WMA Lake Michigan States Section and the Union League Club Environmental Committee are pleased to invite you to join us to hear from Barbara Flynn Currie, Chair of the Illinois Pollution Control Board.
Barbara Flynn Currie is retired from the Illinois House of Representatives where she served as House Majority Leader, the first woman to hold the post. She sponsored the state’s first Freedom of Information Act and the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit. She was a champion for clean air and water; she spearheaded reforms in state funding for public education and in the juvenile justice system. She’s been honored by many organizations including the Illinois ACLU, Planned Parenthood, Illinois AFL-CIO, Illinois Environmental Council, Friends of the Parks, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence and the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. Barbara earned her A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University of Chicago.
The Board is an independent agency created in 1970 by the Environmental Protection Act (Act). Under the Act, the Board has two major responsibilities: determining, defining, and implementing environmental control standards for the State of Illinois, and adjudicating complaints that allege non-criminal violations of the Act. The Board also reviews appeals arising from permitting and other determinations made by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), as well as pollution control facility siting determinations made by units of local government.
