The A&WMA Lake Michigan States Section and the Union League Club Environmental Committee are pleased to invite you to hear from Chris Sauve and Carter O'Brien from the Department of Streets & Sanitation's Recycling and Materials Management team, where they will be describing recent accomplishments, as well as ongoing projects and legislation in the works connected to recommendations contained in the Chicago Waste Strategy published in 2021.
Chris Sauve has been with the Department of Streets & Sanitation for more than 20 years, he has been integral to the development of many of the residential recycling programs- including the rollout of the Blue Cart in 2013. He led the department’s conversion from ward-based to grid-based refuse collection operation resulted in a savings of $10 million per year. In 2016, Chris managed the onboarding of a refuse fee for the 625,000 households, which results in over $60M in collections annually. In 2021, he served as the DSS lead on the Material Management Strategy Report that will be the feature of today’s presentation.
Carter O’Brien is an Assistant Commissioner with the City of Chicago's Department of Streets and Sanitation, where he focuses on policy and operations relating to recycling, composting, and other forms of waste diversion. Joining the department's Recycling & Materials Management team in 2022, he comes to the City following a 25-year career at the Field Museum. As the Museum's Sustainability Officer, he led recycling and composting efforts that resulted in the institution's waste diversion rate improving from 18% to over 60% in less than a decade.
